British law firms’ love affair with US goes on

Britain’s legal market is set for another big transatlantic merger after Denton Wilde Sapte (DWS) announced plans for a tie-up with an American firm yesterday.

The City’s 21st-biggest legal practice will combine with the Chicago-based Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal, creating a global practice with 1,400 lawyers and revenues of almost £500 million. It will be known as SNR Denton.

The merger follows the union of Hogan Lovells last month after the merger of Lovells, one of London’s most respected firms, with Hogan & Hartson, of Washington. That created the world’s ninth-biggest law firm, bringing in revenue of almost $2 billion (£1.4 billion). SJ Berwin is also contemplating a transatlantic merger and is in talks with Proskauer Rose, based in Boston. (more…)

Questions will then be taken.

Solicitors Regulation Authority Freedom In Practice Roadshow
10 June 2010, 8.30am-10.00am at the Holiday Inn Hotel, Liverpool
The way solicitors work is changing, and it is time to find out what ‘outcomes-focused regulation’ and ‘alternative business structures’ really mean for the profession.

New freedoms will mean practitioners can deliver services to clients in settings other than the traditional law firm. At the time, the rulebook will be simplified, to focus on the quality of the services to clients, with more flexibility for firms on how they deliver those services.

Freedom in Practice is an SRA campaign to encourage the profession to contribute to and prepare for how these changes will work on the ground.

Book your place online at www.sra.org.uk/freedominpractice or email freedominpractice@sra.org.uk or call 01926 487138 (between 2 and 4pm).  The event is free and registered for CPD points.

Wine Tasting Evening
1 July 2010, 5.30pm at Liverpool Law Society

You are invited to attend this hugely successful networking event where you will be given the opportunity to enjoy a fine selection of wines in relaxed surroundings while participating in a quiz to test the knowledge of even those who claim to be experts!

Members are asked to bring a colleague or associate from a different profession, such as accountants, surveyors or stock brokers for which you will be entered into a draw on the night.

Tickets are priced at £10.00 plus VAT per person

Book your place early to avoid disappointment.
